Spies spoke against the rocks of Eretz Yisrael and were severely punished. Insult against a person (e.g. Moshe) vs against a stone (ramp of alter). Are we permitted to speak lashon hara against inanimate objects? 

The Sages of the Talmud would kiss stones and roll around in the dirt of Eretz Yisrael.
